It is indisputable that a building is essentially a 'static machine' - designed to support other activities e.g. storage, commerce, manufacturing or indeed life itself.

The necessity for the 'machine' to provide heat, light, power hot & cold water, air or medical gases together with efficient drainage etc is naturally variable, dependant upon usage - but some element is always present (If only in the format of a simple rainwater disposal installation).
